-
- Rockwell chips are used in very good and very bad modems, same chips, just
- a different attitute of the end modem maker, thus a different price and
- a different satisfaction. Logicode's modems do not compromise on quality
- and certainly neither do PPI's.

-
- mercy is the right word.

-
- EQM (eye quality monitor) is meant to be a meaningless number to the user
- but it is quite meaningfull to the modem controller which makes decisions
- about the initial speed selection and retrains/rate renegs afterwards.
-
- The controller will automatically manipulate the modem speed in response to
- EQM changes, if you are curious you can watch it by AT%Q. It is
- averaged and the smaller the number, the cleaner the signal constellation.
- At V.34 speeds, the controller falls back to lower speed when EQM reaches
- about 50-60. Other companies' modems use the same mechanism, they might
- call it RMSE (root mean square error), it is also meaningless and it might
- be scaled differently.
-
- Also try AT%L to see the receive level, it should be between 22-28 (negative
- dBm) for a common line in U.S.

-
- just make sure with USR you get an upgrade policy stretching beyond the
- expected date of ratification for 33.6 speed. Also, they should support the
- existing 33.6 (non-standard) and whatever will finally become a standard.
- (just like V.fc and V.34)
